Kenneth Masser, often called Bill by his friends, was educated at Shrewsbury School and in 1951 finished second in the School Sculls at the Henley Town Regatta. Upon going to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Masser won the first of three Blues in the 100th Boat Race in 1954. Unfortunately for Masser, Oxford won. He was, however, on the winning crew in 1955 and 1956. Shortly after the 1955 triumph, Masser was elected president of the Cambridge University Boat Club (CUBC).
Masser won the 1955 Magdalene Pairs at Cambridge with M. G. Baynes and in 1956 went to the Melbourne Olympics with the Great Britain eight, but they were eliminated in the first round repêchage. The following year, Masser finished second in the gruelling 125-mile Devizes to Westminster canoe race with fellow Trinity Hall student J. A. Chase. Their time of 26:29.00 was bettered only by two Royal Marines, B. D. White and K. Aston, who completed the course in 25:28.15.
