Günter Petersmann was a member of the West German eights at the 1972 München Olympics that finished a disappointing fifth. In 1971 and 1972 he won three West German national titles. His daughters Katrin and Cerstin were also rowers, and participated in the eights at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
By profession, Petersmann became a signaler at Deutsche Bahn. Besides his job, he became a rowing coach at the Dortmund Regional Olympic Center. From 1973-90 he was also the chief national coach.
