Antal Szebeny and his three brothers, the twins Miklós and György, and the youngest, István, started their sports career as rowers with the Pannónia Rowing Club. Prior to the 1908 Olympics, the Pannónia eight defeated the famous Thames Rowing Association. At the Games, however, they could only finish fifth.
In 1910, also with Pannonia’s eight, Antal Szebeny won a bronze medal at the European championship. The following year, the four brothers left Pannónia and founded the Hungária Rowing Club, and that year, and again in 1912, they won the national coxed fours title. Also in 1912 the eights of Hungária finished seventh at the Stockholm Olympics. Antal retired from competitive rowing in 1914 and concentrated on his medical career. He worked as a radiologist, and died at a relatively young age, possibly from exposure to radiation.
