István Szebeny started his career as an athlete at the Pannónia Rowing Club together with his three brothers, the twins Miklós and György and their oldest, Antal. In 1911, the four Szebeny brothers left Pannónia and founded the Hungária Rowing Club. In 1911 and 1912, they won the national title in coxless fours. At the 1912 Olympic Games they failed to reach the final.
