István Szendeffy started rowing in the colors of Pannónia EE. Between 1921 and 1924 he was a six-time Hungarian champion in coxed fours and eights. At the European Championships he won silver in 1921 and a bronze medal in 1922 in the eights. He competed at the 1924 Olympics with the coxed fours of Pannonia. Since their new ship from England was damaged in transport to Paris, it filled with water during the preliminary rounds and they did not make the Olympic final.
Szendeffy graduated from the University of Technology and Economics. After finishing his sports career, he held a position in Budapest as a municipal official. He first worked for the Court of Auditors and then for the Budapest Zoo, first as a cashier inspector and deputy director. He also wrote a novel with the title of Diary of Love, which was about the end of the war in 1944-45 and the period immediately following it, all in the form of a diary.
