Doctor Yoshiki Hiki was a specialist in gastroenterology and surgery. During his time at medical school Hiki represented Japan at the Olympics as a rower. In 1958 he graduated from the Keio University School of Medicine with a doctorate in medicine. In the late 1960s Hiki studied at the faculty of medicine at the University of Kiel in West Germany. After his return to Japan he became a professor at Kitasato University School of Medicine in 1984. In the 1990s Hiki was the director of Kitasato University East Hospital and became a professor emeritus at Kitasato University.
While Hiki was in his fourth year of medical school he had an opportunity to row at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. After initially fearing he might not be given the time off to attend the Games, the dean of the student council gave his approval for Hiki to go to Australia. He rowed in the eight where the Japanese crew reached the semi-finals.
