Shokichi Nanba’s family was successful in the securities business. He graduated from the Keio University’s Faculty of Economics. While attending Keio, he competed in rowing at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics as coxswain of the coxed fours. After graduating Nanba joined Furukawa Electric, a company with several sports teams including a rowing team. He was later appointed managing Director of Furukawa Aluminum Industry.
