Jos Compaan began rowing at a young age and was just 19-years-old when she represented the Netherlands at the 1977 World Championships in Amsterdam. After a couple more appearances at the World Championships, Compaan was selected to row in the coxed quadruple sculls at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. The Dutch team finished second in their heat, advancing to the final via the repêchage, where they finished sixth. After the Moskva Games she switched to the single sculls, finishing 11th at the 1983 World Championships, before coming 8th at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Compaan once again changed discipline, this time rowing in the quadruple sculls, where she won bronze at the 1986 World Championships in Nottingham, England. Two years later she made her third and final appearance at the Olympics where she came seventh with the Dutch team at the 1988 Games in Seoul.
Compaan married Dutch rowing coach Rob Robbers, who had also competed at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Their daughter Karien rowed in the coxless pairs at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. Compaan also worked as a physiotherapist and later served as the chair of the Amsterdam rowing club Willem III.
