In 1907, he was a bank employee and went to the United States. After his return to Norway, he was the co-owner of a book-printing company. During the German occupation he was arrested in 1943 for almost three months by the secret police. At that time he was a sous-chef in a restaurant. He was married to Laura Hendry Broch.
