Primarily known as a rower Carlos Oliveira was an all-round Portuguese athlete who competed in multiple sports. Oliveira won multiple national titles in rowing but he also participated in judo, wrestling, athletics, sailing, and football. Along with Manuel Barroso the pair competed in the double sculls at the 1972 München Olympics, but finished in last place in both their heat and their repêchage race.
A year after the Olympics Oliveira did the remarkable feat of winning three national titles in three different sports with wins in judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, and rowing. His success in wrestling was not a fluke as he earned six international caps and won four national titles. As a rower he won more than 60 titles and made almost 150 international appearances. Oliveira continued rowing throughout his life, winning the world rowing title as a veteran in 2004 at the age of 61.
