In the 1950s Portuguese rower José Pinheiro was part of the eight crew at Clube dos Galitos. In 1952 the club’s team was selected to compete in the event at the Helsinki Olympics, with Pinheiro serving as the coxswain. The team had a disappointing Games, however, finishing last in their round one heat before also finishing last in their repêchage heat. Following his death in August 2019, the José Matos Memorial has been held in his honour.
