Hans Walter was the stroke for the Swiss coxed four from the Grasshopper Club Zürich that won the 1920 gold medal. The same crew had already won the European Championship just before the Antwerpen Olympics. Before and after World War I, Walter won another three titles at the European Championships in 1911-13 in the coxed fours, also winning two titles (1912, 1920) and two second places (1911, 1913) in the eights. At the 1924 Paris Olympics Walter made a comeback and repeated his triumph in the coxed four and added a bronze medal in the coxless fours to become one of the most successful Swiss rowers.
