During his rowing career Leonid Ivanov won six medals at the USSR championships in the eight, including gold in both 1953 and 1961. In 1960 Ivanov was part of the Soviet eight crew at the Roma Olympics, with the team being eliminated in the repêchage. After his competitive career he later worked as a coach, as well as a lecturer at the Leningrad Mechanical Institute.
