Biography

Yury Suslin began rowing in 1951 at a local club in his hometown of Leningrad, becoming the Champion of the USSR in the coxed four in 1957. Suslin won a further six Soviet titles during his career with two more in the coxed four (1961, 1962), two in the coxless pairs (1965, 1966), and one each in the coxed pair (1969) and eight (1964). He also won his first of four silver medals at the European Championships in 1957 when he was part of the Soviet crew in the coxed four. Suslin won his next silver in 1961 in the coxless four, followed by back-to-back silvers in the eight in 1963 and 1964.

Suslin represented the Soviet Union in the eight at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Soviet team won their heat to advance directly to the final where they finished fifth. His younger brother Viktor won bronze in the eight four years later at the 1968 Mexico City Games.
