John Cooke played football in high school, but took up rowing after matriculating at Yale. He graduated in 1959, after rowing in the sixth seat for the 1956 gold medalists, and then went to law school. After college, Cooke joined the US Marine Corps and served several years in Asia. He worked the rest of his life for an air freighting company, while also being involved in local politics. John Cooke also returned to football, as a youth coach.
