Peter Cortes rowed for Yale, graduating in 1969 with a degree in physics, after having prepped at Phillips Exeter Academy. In 1976 he was doing graduate work at Yale while training for the Olympics, but he later earned a PhD from Cornell in plant physiology. Cortes coached the US women’s team at the 1977 World Championships and later coached the Putney Rowing Club in Vermont. He would work as a plant botanist, publishing several scientific papers.
