Robert Farnam was from Brooklyn and rowed for the Seawanhaka Boat Club at the 1904 Olympics. In 1905, he and Olympic partner, Joe Ryan, added a national title in the fours, recruiting Joseph McLoughlin from the Ravenswood BC to join them. McLoughlin had rowed on the boat which finished second in 1904 to Farnam and Ryan.
