Joe Ryan had the stroke-oar for New York’s Seawanhaka Boat Club in the pair at the 1904 Olympics. His bowman was Robert Farnam. Ryan had won the Eagle Cup at Flushing Bay in 1902. He had various business careers, working initially as a clerk and then in manufacturing in Brooklyn. He and his wife, the former Sadie Hawkins, moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1910. They moved to Beverly, Massachusetts in the late 1920 and then to Holbrook, Massachusetts, where he owned a shoe firm and worked as a shoe broker, and then as a credit manager for Yunits Engineering in Holbrook.
