Before entering Yale, Stu Griffing joined the service and served out the last days of World War II. Upon returning to New Haven, he joined the Yale crew team, rowing for all four years. He was on the Yale varsity eight which lost to Harvard both at the Eastern Sprints and the Harvard-Yale Regatta in 1948, but the next year the tables were turned as Yale beat Harvard in their classic race.
