Matt Leanderson rowed the stroke oar for the University of Washington four at the 1952 Olympics. Their boat qualified easily for the finals but was then beaten decisively by the Czech shell, although they narrowly lost the silver medals to a Swiss crew. After graduating from Washington, he coached crew at that school, as well as at MIT and Western Washington University. He was an avid salmon fisherman, gardener, and flew model airplanes.
