William Long attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating in 1961. In 1960 the Naval Academy eight won the title at the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen (NAAO) meet, which doubled as the Olympic Trials. The Midshipmen eight placed fifth at the 1960 Olympics, breaking the US streak of winning the rowing eights, which extended from 1920-56.
