Biography

Art McKinlay and his brother, John, became the second set of twin brothers to compete for the United States in the Olympics – after the White, Edgar and Sumner, brothers in 1952 yachting. Together they had won three national titles for the Detroit BC, in the 1951 fours without, and the 1953 fours with and pairs with. Their 1956 Olympic Trials victory counted as another national championship and in 1957 they again won the U.S. title in the fours with. McKinlay served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, earning the rank of sergeant. He attended Boston University for two years, later graduating from the Detroit Institute of Technology with an accounting degree, and he served as an accountant for National Reproductions Corp. in Detroit, until his retirement in 1997.
