James McMullen rowed for the West Side Rowing Club in 1956, and had already rowed for five years by the time of the Olympics, although he was only a college freshman at the University of Pennsylvania. By that time he had already won prep, Canadian, and local honors in rowing. McMullen graduated from Penn in 1959 and later rowed for the College Boat Club of the University of Pennsylvania. He also competed at the 1958 European Championships, winning a bronze medal in the coxless four.
