Bill Miller

Bill Miller was from suburban Boston and rowed at Northeastern University, graduating in 1970. He rowed with the US National team from 1969-75. In addition to his Olympic appearance, he won a bronze medal in coxed fours at the 1971 Pan American Games. He also rowed at the 1969 and 1973 European Championships and the 1974-75 World Championships.

Miller later became a renowned rowing coach and historian, starting the well-known website www.rowinghistory.net. He started coaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1973-78, at Boston University from 1978-86, and was at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy from 1996-2002. He was coach of the lightweight eights at the 1982 World Championships, and was manager of the US Teams at the 1977 and 1979 Worlds.

His son, Will Miller, rowed in the eights for the US at the 2012 Olympics. The father-son pair are also only the second non-British father-son winners at the Henley Royal Regatta, with Bill senior winning the Prince Philip Challenge Cup in 1973, and Will junior winning the 2008 Prince of Wales Challenge Cup. Bill Miller was inducted into the Northeastern University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982 and became a director on the board of the National Rowing Foundation in 2004.
