John Moore studied at Duke University, graduating in 1989, which was an interesting choice as it had no varsity rowing team when he was in college. He helped fund the Duke club crew program when, while an undergraduate student, he met with a donor from the family of Standard Commercial Tobacco, and received a grant of $100,000 in stock in the company for the crew program.
In addition to his 1992 Olympics appearance, Moore rowed the coxed pair at the 1991 and 1993 World Championships, winning a silver medal in 1993. Moore majored in Latin in college and later taught at Upland Country Day School near Philadelphia. He was a member of the Philadelphia Classic Society.
