Charles Ruthford started rowing at the University of Washington, where he graduated in 1973 with a degree in mathematics. He captained the Huskies crew team in 1972 and also rowed for the Lake Washington Rowing Club. He was on the 1971 Pan American Games eights as an alternate, but did not compete, but did compete at the 1973 European Championships in the coxed fours. After college Ruthford earned a masters’ degree in management from Stanford in 1975.
In 1973 Ruthford began work for the Boeing Company, in various positions, including management and leadership positions in ethics, management and leadership development, sales and marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and information technology. While working with Boeing in ethics and compliance, he chaired the Defense Industry Initiative on business conduct and ethics survey team. Ruthford left Boeing in 2009 to start his own company, Intensional Connection, a firm specializing in ethics and compliance.
