John Stack attended the University of California and had the bow seat on their eight at the 1948 Olympics. That was the year that Cal pulled a big upset at the Olympic Trials by defeating a Washington crew that had beaten them twice earlier in the year. After college, Stack became an engineer, specializing in x-ray technology.
