John Strotbeck competed twice at the Olympic Games (1984, 1988), twice at the World Championships (1985-86), and twice at the Pan American Games (1983, 1987). Strotbeck won a gold in coxless fours at the 1983 Pan Americans and silver in the eights in 1987. To these, he added a 1985 World bronze medal in the eights, and a silver in coxless pairs at the 1986 Goodwill Games. During his career he won seven US Championships.
Strotbeck attended Marietta College, graduating in 1979 with a degree in management. He later started his own company, Boathouse Sports, a manufacturer of custom team athletic apparel made in the USA. Strotbeck settled in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
