Skip Sweetser attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating in 1960. In 1960 the Naval Academy eight won the title at the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen (NAAO) meet, which doubled as the Olympic Trials. The Midshipmen eight placed fifth at the 1960 Olympics, breaking the US streak of winning the rowing eights, which extended from 1920-56.
Sweetser later became a colonel in the US Marines Corps. He came from a renowned military family with a long heritage. His father, Warren Edwards Sweetser, Jr., was a Marine Brigadier General who served during World War II and the Korean War. His father, Skip’s grandfather, was Warren Edwards Sweetser, who was an Army Brigadier General who served during the Spanish-American War and World War I. His father, Skip’s great-grandfather, was Marshall Prescott Sweetser, who was a Lieutenant in the Army during the Civil War. And his father, Skip’s great-great-grandfather, Warren Sweetser, was a merchant in Stoneham, Massachusetts in the early 19th Century whose homestead, the Warren Sweetser House, still stands in Stoneham and is considered a National Historic Landmark.
