Darrel Vreugdenhil had a long international career, racing in US boats first at the 1973 European Championships, and finally at the 1983 Pan American Games, where he won silver in the coxless four. Vreugdenhil also won Pan Am Medals in 1975, a gold in coxed pairs, and 1979, with a silver in the coxless four. He also took part in four World Championships (1974-75, 1977-78), in various boats, but never winning a medal.
Vreugdenhil attended Western Washington University, graduating in 1972, and also rowed for the Vesper Boat Club. While at Western Washington he won northwest small college titles in the eight in 1971 and 1972, and he is a member of the Western Washington Sports Hall of Fame. Vreugdenhil later worked in printing management for Braceland Brothers. He married 1976 Olympic rower Diane Braceland.
