John Walters attended the US Naval Academy, graduating in 1985 with a degree in aerospace engineering. He was 1987 US Champion in coxed pairs. Walters competed at two World Championships, winning a bronze medal in coxed fours in 1986, and placing fifth in coxed pairs in 1987.
