Biography

William Smith, a veteran of the Second Boer War, was a sergeant with the Governor General’s Foot Guards when he was selected to represent Canada at the 1908 Summer Olympics. He had the highest individual score among his teammates Charles Crowe, William Eastcott, Harry Kerr, Dugald McInnes, and Bruce Williams in the military rifle team event and helped them take the bronze medal in the event. The following year, at Britain’s prestigious Bisley tournament, he won the Daily Graphic Cup by earning the highest score with seven shots at 200 yards. He remained active in sporting shooting through the 1910s and served during both World Wars, the second in the capacity of an aircraft inspector. Later in life he was employed at The Ottawa Journal.
