Trevan Clough

Businessman Trevan Clough spent more than five decades dedicated to the growth and success of the Brian Bell Group, a set of homeware retail stores in Papua New Guinea. Clough worked in the company from its early days to help establish the company’s expansion across the country. He moved to Papua New Guinea when he was 6-years-old, gaining citizenship in the mid-1970s.

Clough was a keen sportsman who represented his nation in trap shooting, including the World Championships in Melbourne in 1973 and Switzerland in 1974. In April 1976 he qualified for the Olympics after competing at the Olympic trials in Port Moresby. A few months later Papua New Guinea made their début at the Olympics, sending a delegation of six athletes to the Montréal Games. Clough was the sole representative in shooting and tied for 35th place. He was hampered somewhat after suffering from whiplash after being involved in a bus accident in Canada.

Two years later Clough competed at the Commonwealth Games in Montréal, but suffered more misfortune when he slipped and fell at the Strathcona Shooting Range, injuring his right arm in the process. Despite the injury he was still able to compete, placing 15th in the clay pigeon trap event. Clough returned to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, where he placed 66th. He was committed to the promotion of the Olympic Movement in the island nation, playing a key role in the establishment of the Papua New Guinea Olympian Association in 2019. When Clough died in February 2025, Prime Minister James Marape led the tributes praising his life and entrepreneurship skills.
