The trap shooters were affected by heavy wind, which bothered many of the shooting events in Montréal. The final scores were the lowest since the event went to 200 targets in 1952. The gold went to American Don Haldeman, who led after the first round with 72 of 75. The lead after the second 75 birds was taken by Italy’s Ubaldesco Baldi, with 144 ahead of Haldeman’s 143. On the final round, Haldeman shot 47 for 190, while Baldi slipped to 45 and tied Portugal’s Armando Silva. Marques won the shoot-off for the silver medal, 25-23. Haldeman had been the silver medalist at the 1975 Pan-American Games and was the 1972 Inter-Service Champion.
