Biography

Austrian swimmer Karl Ruberl won two medals at the 1900 Paris Olympics over 200 metres freestyle (bronze) and 200 metres backstroke (silver). He also finished fourth in the 200 metres obstacle course. Directly after the Games he emigrated to the Unites States and became a naturalised citizen in 1904 under the name Charles Ruberl.

Ruberl then swam with the New York Athletic Club and set several American records. By profession, he became a banker, founding Bainbridge, Ryan and Ruberl bank until the New York stock market crash in 1929. He was also a versatile musician, playing piano and violin at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He was a close friend of Otto Wahle, another Austrian swimmer who also emigrated to the US.
