Cari Read was first partnered with Karen Fonteyne in the synchronized swimming duet in 1988 and together they took bronze at the 1991 Pan Pacific Championships and silver in the team event at that year’s World Championships, alongside Lisa Alexander, Karen Clark, Christine Larsen, and the non-Olympians Charlene Davies, Kathy Glen, and Heather Johnston. By the 1994 World Championships, the next time the event was held, the Canadian team was comprised of Alexander, Clark, Fonteyne, Read, Janice Bremner, Kasia Kulesza, Erin Woodley and the non-Olympian Carrie DeGuerre. Together they finished second, and then added Larsen, Sylvie Fréchette, and Valérie Hould-Marchand at the expense of DeGuerre and earned another silver medal, this time at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Read retired shortly after the Games and attended graduate school for kineisiology at the University of Calgary, graduating in 2001. She was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
