Biography

Finnish swimmer Anneli Haaranen competed during the first half of the 1950s, specialising in the 100 metres backstroke. From 1950 to 1954 Haaranen was the national champion in the event, and also won the 400 metres freestyle title in 1955. She also won medals at the Nordic Championships in her favoured event with silver in 1951 and 1953, along with a bronze in 1955. In 1952 she was selected to compete at the Helsinki Olympics, finishing 13th in the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay and 15th in the 100 metres backstroke.
