Edwin Borja was only 14-years-old when he represented the Philippines at the 1972 München Olympics. Borja swam in the 1,500 metres freestyle, placing 41st, in addition to being part of the quartet that swam in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay. Two years later he won bronze in the 1,500 metres freestyle and the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay at the Asian Games in Tehran. Borja returned to the Olympics for the 1976 Games in Montréal, swimming in the 400 and 1,500 metres freestyle, the 200 metres butterfly, and the 400 metres individual medley.
Prior to representing the Philippines at the Olympics, Borja moved to the United States with his family in 1971, where they lived in New Jersey. Along with his brother, he graduated from La Salle University in Philadelphia, and then worked for Dana Companies as a controller. In March 2025 Borja was tragically killed in a road accident when he was hit by another vehicle that was driving the wrong way down Route 70 in Lakewood, New Jersey.
