Gene Friesen first worked as the coach of the softball team at the high school in Nipawin, Saskatchewan before he was asked to coach the curling team. This began a life-long love of the sport for Friesen, which saw him coach at a provincial and national level. By 2001 he was the coach of the Canadian women’s team, who went on to win bronze at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. The same year Friesen was honoured with the CCA Award of Achievement for his contributions to the sport.
