Biography
Sir Eric de Normann came from a long line of Jersey residents. He was educated at Chateau du Rosey in Switzerland and at the University College of South Wales. After serving in World War I between 1915-18, when he was twice mentioned in dispatches, he joined the Office of Works in 1920, and spent almost his entire working life with them, apart from a brief spell with the Imperial Defence College in 1935. De Normann was appointed the deputy secretary of the Ministry of Works in 1943, a position he held until his retirement in 1954. Between 1954-63 de Normann was the chairman of the Ancient Monuments Board for England. He was knighted in 1946, and at the 1948 London Olympics, he was deputy chairman of the British Olympic committee for the Art competitions.
