The two well established competitions for “Town Planning” and “Architectural Design“ were held again in London. All medals were awarded as well as additional honorable mentions. The exhibits for the two competitions were identical, but were assessed separately for both categories. Therefore, works that were not awarded with a medal cannot be attributed to either category. A total of 55 architects, including one woman, from 14 countries submitted 46 projects.
The winning entry in the competition for designs for town planning was sent in by Yrjö Lindgren. The Finnish architect had designed the stadium for the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were never held due to the outbreak of World War II. Lindgren’s gold medal was not for his stadium, but for The Centre of Athletics in Varkaus. The bronze medal in the competition was also won by a Finn, Ilmari Niemeläinen. He is one of the few artists who also competed as an athlete, competing in diving in both 1936 and 1948.
