Allan Smith was a skilled swimmer in his youth, but his focus in aquatics was diving. In 1950 he represented Sri Lanka in his specialty, the springboard competition, at the British Empire Games and placed eighth. His other major international tournament was the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he finished 31st in a field of 36 competitors.
As of 2016, this makes him one of only two divers to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympics, the other being Janaka Biyanwila in 1996. Smith later moved to Australia, but Colombo’s Rainbow Aquatic Club still offers the annual Norman Allan Smith Challenge Cup to its best diver.
