Jackie LaVine placed fifth in the 100m at the 1952 U.S. Final Trials and swam the lead-off leg for the freestyle relay team which won the bronze medals at the Helsinki Olympics. Four years earlier, she had also finished fifth in the 100m freestyle at the Final Trials and went to London as an alternate to the relay team, but did not get to compete. Between the two Olympics, however, she won five AAU titles and a gold medal in 4×100 metre freestyle (with Carolyn Green, Betty Mullen, and the non-Olympian Sharon Geary) and a silver medal in 100 metre freestyle at the 1951 Pan American Games.
