Ethel Lackie grew up near Chicago, where she had learned to swim by the time she was three. She later lived near Lake Michigan and represented the Illinois AC in competition. Lackie set numerous U.S. and world records and was the first woman to break 60 seconds for the 100y freestyle and the first to clock 1:10.0 for the 100m freestyle. After her retirement she married Bill Watkins, a well-known rowing champion in the Santa Monica area.
