Louis Balbach, a Californian studying at Columbia University, placed sixth on the platform at the 1920 Olympics in addition to taking the bronze medal in the springboard. Balbach first came to prominence as a teenager, winning the diving competition at the 1915 San Francisco World’s Fair. He also entered the Olympic trials of both 1924 and 1928, by which time he was practicing law in Portland, Oregon.
