Jennifer Azzi

Jennifer Azzi was a point guard who played in college at Stanford. She was a first-team Kodak All-American in 1989 and 1990, and in her senior year, she won the Wade Trophy, Naismith Award, and the Honda Sports Award for basketball.

Azzi won a gold medal with the US team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She also won three medals at the World Championships (later World Cup), with golds in 1990 and 1998, and a bronze in 1994, and added a gold medal at the 1994 Goodwill Games. In 1992, she also played on the USA team that won bronze at the Pan American Games. Azzi toured with the USA national team through 1999, and was highly considered for the 2000 Olympic team, but withdrew from consideration.

Azzi played professionally, starting in the ABL (American Basketball League) from 1996-99 with the San Jose Lasers. After that league folded, she was selected in the 1999 WNBA draft by the Detroit Shock. She played with them for one year, and then was traded to the Utah Starzz. The Starzz relocated to San Antonio, and became the San Antonio Silver Stars. Azzi played in the WNBA through 2003, retiring in early 2004.

In 2010 Azzi was named head women’s basketball coach at the University of San Francisco. She coached through September 2016 but then stepped down to pursue other careers. Azzi was a member of the USA Basketball Board of Directors from 2005-08. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
