Bill Orthwein was the first of many Yale graduates to win an Olympic swimming medal. At the 1904 Olympics he represented the Missouri AC and, in addition to his relay medal, he placed fourth in the 100m freestyle. Orthwein later attended Washington University Law School and became a prominent attorney in St. Louis. He also entered politics, once running for governor of Missouri, although he was defeated in that attempt. His son, William Orthwein, Jr., was an owner of the New England Patriots in the early 1990s.
