Carla McGhee played college basketball at the University of Tennessee, leading them to NCAA Championships in 1987 and 1989. She achieved this despite being in a serious car accident in 1987, when she sustained brain injuries and was in a coma for 47 hours. McGhee played internationally for the United States multiple times, helping the team win gold medals at the 1987 Jones Cup, the 1994 Goodwill Games, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, adding a silver medal at the 1994 World Championships.
McGhee played professionally for 12 years. With no women’s pro basketball when she graduated from Tennesee in 1990, she played overseas, spending seasons in Germany (1990-91, 1998), Spain (1991-93), and Italy (1993-95). When the ABL (American Basketball League) started, McGhee played one season with the Atlanta Glory. She then played for the Orlando Miracle in the WNBA from 1999-2002, retiring after her final season.
