Water polo player Terry Mitchell made his England début against Ireland at Skegness in 1948 when just 16-years-of-age. He became the youngest ever England international at the time and scored twice in a 9-3 win. He went on to make more than 40 international appearances in an eight-year career. As a youngster, he was also a junior freestyle sprint champion.
Miller was a prolific goalscorer and was regarded as the finest British water polo player of his era. In the 1950 season he scored a record 309 goals, and in the two seasons, 1949 and 1950, found the net 600 times. He also set the record for the most goals in a Home International match when he scored 11 times against Wales at Newport in 1951. The son of a Southwark police inspector, Miller started his career with Plaistow and he helped them win the ASA Club Water Polo Championship in 1953 and 1954. In the second of those years he scored the extra-time winner 10 seconds from the end of the extra period in a 6-5 victory over Cheltenham.
Miller appeared in the 1954 European Championships and competed in both the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He stopped playing international water polo in May 1955 to concentrate on a rugby career with Harlequins and Surrey, and also hoped to win a rugby international cap. He made a polo comeback in July 1956, however, against Spain at Cheltenham. He joined the crack Penguin club the previous month following a dispute with Plaistow over his combined rugby/water polo career
By profession, Miller was a Lloyds Bank manager, and one-time principal of their Training College. As a result of his role at the bank, he was appointed treasurer of the Penguin Club. His younger brother Keith also played water polo for both Plaistow and Penguin.
