Biography

Gerry Worsell followed in the footsteps of his father, W. H. “Pop” Worsell, to play water polo for the Sutton and Cheam Swimming Club. His first selection to represent Great Britain internationally, however, came when he was a student at Liverpool University in 1949, but he went on to represent the Sutton and Cheam and the nation at the 1952 and 1956 Olympic tournaments. In both years, Great Britain was eliminated in the group stages. Worsell retired from active competition shortly after the Melbourne Games and turned to coaching, primarily with the Royal Air Force. His work in the military lead him to settle in Australia, where he eventually worked at the University of New England in New South Wales. In 1990, he received the Order of Australia for his services to higher education.
